Sneak Peak…

<beep> <beep> <beep> chimes Emily’s iPhone.

It’s 7am and it’s time to wake up.  She rolls over in bed and reaches for her iPhone to see if there are any emails or text messages she missed while she slept.  She received a message last night from Kat.  Kat is free this afternoon and wants to get together for lunch.  She asks Emily to recommend something.

While fondling her iPhone, she quickly browses Facebook to see what her friends are up to.  Since buying her iPhone, she hardly touches her computer anymore.  She keeps up to date with what’s going on in her world and her friends’ lives via the Facebook and Twitter apps.

After a quick shower and breakfast, she drives through The Supreme Bean, her favorite coffee stand.  While there, she sees a sign that says, “Scan your phone here and receive a free coffee after 10 purchases.”  Since she frequents Supreme Bean, she thinks why not?  So she whips out her iPhone and scans it against the QR Code affixed to the side of the coffee hut.

“There you go!” says the blond teenager as he hands her the latte.  He says, “You wouldn’t believe how many people try to game the system.  They will come by and just scan the board a few times thinking they could get multiple credits per visit.  Thank goodness the system is set up automatically so that you only get one credit per visit, or we would have gone out of business.”  They share a good chuckle and Emily drives off to work.

She is quite nervous because today Maria wants to see her for a special assignment.  Maria is the owner of the three-restaurant local chain where Emily works.  Emily is the assistant manager at one of the restaurants and she has no idea why the meeting was called. Maria wants Emily to report to the office at Gino’s Pizza first thing in the morning.  Steeling herself, she approaches Maria’s office.

“Good Morning Emily,” Maria says as Emily knocks on the door of her office.  Maria’s office looks like the Tasmanian Devil had a field day in it.  It’s amazing anyone could even work in that environment.  In fact, Emily had offered to help her tidy her office, but Maria insists that she has a system.  Despite all appearances, Maria seems to know where almost everything is.

“You’re probably wondering why I have asked you in this morning,” said Maria as she cleared a chair for Emily.   “I like you Emily.  I think you will go far with us.  You are diligent, young, and full of ideas.  You are not like some of my managers who stick to doing things just because that’s what we’ve always done.  You see, my family has been in the pizza business since 1984, and things have changed a lot since then.  We’ve done pretty well, as you can see, and we’ve got three restaurants in Chicago now. However, I feel that we’re stagnating, particularly in the area of marketing.

“I have been paying for a Yellow Pages ad for as long as I can remember and, frankly, I don’t even know if people even use it these days.  To be honest with you, I don’t even remember the last time I actually opened up a Yellow Pages.  I’ve also been paying for ads with coupon companies to promote Gino’s, yet I want to see if I can do better.

“I want to take this restaurant to a higher level, to improve upon what my father had left when he passed away.  I see all these new changes happening around me such as social media and mobile technology, and I have no idea how to use them to grow my business.  All I know about mobile phones is that I have one and I use it to check my email.

“This is where you come in.  I want you to spend the next couple of weeks researching everything you can about this and come back to me with a proposal about what we can do to grow our business.  I’ve given Susie a temporary promotion to take over your position while you are working on this project for me.

“To help you get started, I will introduce you to a few of my friends who are using Facebook and mobile marketing for their businesses.

“I would have loved to do it myself but, as you can see,” Maria threw her arms wide to encompass the piles of paperwork on her desk, “I’m just too busy.”  She slides a sheet of paper toward Emily with the names and phone numbers of a few people.

“And by the way, Emily, the idea is to save money.  Don’t get any fancy ideas.  Times are tough and we’re looking for ways to grow our business but not completely overhaul our business.  I am looking for quick, simple things I can implement quickly and affordably.”

As Maria finished her sentence, her phone rang and she waved Emily out of the office.
